Horrible experience at Pepper Plus Wisma

Went shopping with my colleague yesterday. I had wanted to get more of the shorts from Pepper Plus as the last pair I got were a really good fit.

I tried on a black pair and then was going around deciding which colour and which pattern I should go for. There were quite a few and I must say, it was not easy to decide as most of them were nice.

When I have finally decided on the pink number, the salesgirl actually told me, in a tone that only teachers used on their students, "But once you take that one huh, you cannot try anymore ok?"

I told her I understood, paid for the item and went on my way, but I was quite cheesed off to say the least. At first, I had thought it was because of the way that I was dressed and that she might have thought I was a young thing that could not afford to pay for anything (I often get that look and that sort of attitude from salespeople).

It was only at night, just before I went to bed, that I realised that it could probably be because I was speaking Mandarin with a China accent that she might have taken me for someone from there. You see, I take to accents quite easily and hanging around my China Chinese friends have made me speak better. That made me boil even more.

For the first time, I felt discrimination of a different kind in my own home country and it brought me back to the times when I was back in Oz. Of course, in this situation, it was a lot less life threatening (she did not drive past in a car and hurl insults and threaten to kill) but it was definitely a lot more condescending.

I was also mad because if my stupid little brains were fast enough, I would have told her that I have decided not to buy from her anymore. Well, rest assured now I would not. I will go back to the Toa Payoh branch where the staff are much more friendlier and professional.

Penalising singles

Went to my cousin's place recently and we were talking about how this four month maternity leave was going to make everyone else in the office suffer by doing twice as much and yet receiving the same single salary.

On the one hand, we should go let people make babies. Then the kindergartens and childcare centres will all have very good business. No seriously though, it would be good to regenerate a little. Without the young, who is going to look after the old?

On the other hand though, those who make babies should be a little less gloating. Yes, it is your right to take leave, just like it is your right to budge your baby pram in everybody's way, but I think those preggies should learn to be a little more considerate (I am just generalising here. No offence taken ok?).

Anyway, I think it's time for us singles to assert our rights too and not be marginalised by society.

Rush hour

It was crazy, but I had a very bad craving for food at my old work place. Of all days, it had to be the day when I had to reach work this early (7am). Plus, I did not get the car today. Dad had a lunch appointment and told me to leave the car at home for him.

Luckily, time was a slightly flexible factor and so I rushed to get the very cheap and good bee hoon and half flew to catch the MRT.

Never really did like the MRT. If you click on the link to the labels on MRT, you will find not-so-good stuff written about it. This time around, it is the same. I am not going to dwell too much into it as I think it is a bit of a lost cause. All I want to say is, I wish that one day, they would have an all-female cabin.

I managed to reach my work place at 7.30am. It was a tiring but peaceful, quiet sort of day.

Sleep. Now.

Going to have to reach workplace at 7 am tomorrow. It is one of those days where we can go early and leave early and the workplace would be as peaceful as hell except for the noise of the radio blaring away.

Night-Night everyone. Going to be so dead by the end of tomorrow.

About fulfillment

Today, I almost did not make it to church (again). I barely managed. You see, I am the sort of person, if I were late, then I would rather not go. Same for classes, same for lots of things. I think I just don't want to feel embarrassed with the whole world looking at me.

In today's homily, Father talked about fulfillment and how he recently met this church-goer who had stopped going to church. She came from a well-to-do family and she was earning lots of many and has a happy family, two children and all. One thing she did not feel at this point was that she did not feel fulfilled.

Father reminded us that fulfillment is not always about the big things but also about the small things in life. He was talking about fulfillment in terms of material world and also our own spirituality side of things.

I think I am taking baby steps but I think I am getting there. Though I still need lots and lots of work on the spiritual side.

Just passing by

Haha! I know I am working backwards, but I thought I just had to blog this down.

Went to my favourite Japanese food place again: Mr Sushi Grill Shop at Takashimaya, Basement 2. It is forever packed on Fridays and there are never enough seats as they are all counter seats. Was supposed to meet a friend but that friend was running real late and had asked me to eat first.

As I queued up in the imaginary queue, the waitress took an order from this lady whom, I presumed, went away for awhile and re-appeared, as the waitress explained that she was first. Then she proceeded to ask me for my order.

Now the couple in front of me, who were already hovering around me till I was going dizzy, got very offended. They woman said in Chinese, " We were first here, leh."

Reason given by waitress: "Sorry, because this lady (pointed to lady who re-appeared from nowhere) came first and now, only two customers have finished and left the seats. Since I give this lady first, then there is only one seat left. I can only give it to this other lady (me). Sorry, please wait awhile."

Turns out, the slightly angry couple did not have to wait long as a third person next to the two that were leaving, also left. I didn't have to wait long for my seat either. I was without much expectations that night as I knew this type of situation was going to happen. I am patient when it comes to deliciously good food.

The singly lady and I got our food. My was a salmon teriyaki set. We also got our a la carte order of ika, which is sotong. The portions used to be very good here but the fish on their sets have shrunk and so I ordered more. Besides, I did not eat much for lunch.

The best part was that the couple after the angry couple also got their food and the angry still were waiting for theirs!!! Hahaha! Just not her day. She then complained to the waitress and pointed to all of us and said how come we have all gotten our food and they are still waiting.

I feel I have been made a reluctant guilty party by her pointing at me like that. Plus, I think it was a little rude. I felt a little annoyed at first, but continued to eat anyway, since I did get my food already. Food was yummy and I was hungry!

Then, in a twist of events, this China Chinese lady came along and was trying to ask for the menu from the waitress. I pointed out to her that she could actually see from the light box above. She then told me that it did not look quite the same (she was looking at my food). I had to explain to her that I ordered some extras.

Right after she ordered. This other Japanese guy wanted to order too. He wanted to change the salad on the set to oden (Japanese fishcakes and such) but waitress did not understand. As I tried to play translator, waitress goes into kitchen to get the chef out.

Japanese man asks if she understood English or not. Had to explain to him that she probably understood more Chinese than English. Did not have the heart to tell him that his English was a little difficult for the poor lady to understand. It is not everyday when people would understand when you tell them "salado" (if you could try to imagine the Japanese way of pronunciation).

Then he quickly added that he should learn more Chinese, as it is greatly used everywhere now.

Engaged myself in conversation with the Chinese lady. She seems more cultured than most that I have seen (had quite an unpleasant encounter with local Chinese "Ah Pek" and his China Chinese girlfriend at the same eating place which I did not feel very nice to blog about).

Turns out she was on a business trip and she also asked whether English was taught as a first language here in Singapore and Malaysia. Told her that it definitely was for Singapore but I was not too sure about Malaysia. I also did not want to trouble myself to explain about the old school system whereby you chose either English stream or Chinese stream.

As I have learnt in my many travel experiences, one should never let slip an opportunity to promote one's own country's tourism and boost one's own economy a little. The locals of the countries that I have visited always concentrated on the good stuff and tell of where to eat, where to shop, what to see and so on. Therefore, before I left, I told her that if she was still around tomorrow night (Saturday), shops will be open till 11pm at night.

Here food came as I paid for my bill. We exchanged our good byes and I left on a high note, feeling much better than before.

Movie watching

I have lost touch with watching movies until very recently. Watching movies alone is no fun and it kinda reminded of my ex who would usually fall asleep unless it was X-men or some action packed movie.

Went to watch Quantum of Solace yesterday with my colleague though, despite the fact that friends and other colleagues alike, saying that it might not be so good this time around.

Anyhow, it was the first time I was watching Daniel Craig on the big screen, especially as a double 07 agent. When his first 007 movie came out, I heard so much bad press about him and how his mum leaked out his supposed secret role, that I felt he was the biggest joke in all of 007 Bond history. Then again, those were all just gossip columns and bad press.

Well, after watching Quantum though, I must say, they did choose him for a reason. He does have quite a good body. Or maybe, he HAD to train for it. Anyhow, it did look good, especially since he was so well suited. It was a very good cut.

I find the plot rather draggy though, but it has to be, in order to maintain that Bond flavour. I suppose it was also because it dealt more with Bond's personal feelings.

You want to know the real reason for watching 007? It's coz we didn't want to squeeze with the other kids to watch Madagascar 2. Move it! Hahaha! Will definitely watch that one.

P/s: The other movie that I caught the last weekend was "The Coffin".

Malacca, Malacca

Well, I am really going to Malacca for the next long weekend. Going with two of my colleagues. They have wanted to badly to go to Bangkok but I kinda managed to convince them against it. Dad thinks it is too dangerous to go there now. Me, I just don't want to spend that much as my Christmas trip is also coming up soon.

I foresee lots of these short trips next year as there are many, many long weekends! Even if it is not with my colleagues, it would be with family. :)

Really looking forward to having a taste of Peranakan food in Malacca and sometimes I secretly wish I was a Nonya myself. Many people ask if I am one, simply because I pepper my conversation with the little Malay words that I know.

Sadly I am not, if not, I would have such rich and interesting history to tell, with all the mixed blood uncles and aunties. Nevertheless, I am pretty glad I am living in this part of the world where the Peranakan (or what some may call Straits Chinese) culture is alive and kicking!

Shopping and stress is not good

Man! I have been spending and spending! I was wondering why. Then I realised it was because I was stressed out with my coming assignment that is due next week. I am returning to my old ways and I have to curb myself. Went to buy the M.A.C Christmas lipstick pouch set just because the red pouch really went well with my mobile phone!!!

Luckily, I do use lipsticks and lip gloss and so, nothing is going to waste. Also bought the M.A.C Mineralize Loose powder (funny though coz the box says foundation in English and then slash "loose poudre" in French. So is it a foundation powder or loose powder. Hmmmm....got to check up their website again to find out more.

Also introduced my colleague to M.A.C and Laneige. She was stocking up on her annual make-up supply and turning to me for some help. Well, she was going to buy everything M.A.C when I advised her to look at other brands instead. She is really fair and so I thought it would be better for her to use Laneige. True enough, it was a better fit and so, she happily completed her buys with some Laneige products.

Well, personally, I am making a gradual switch to Laneige products myself, since Paul and Joe is going to discontinue the line of cleanser that I use. The girl was nice enough to give me some samples to use and I think I will be buying some new cleansers soon, but not before I use up my three bottles.

Then again, like how babies cannot just switch milk powders just like that, I might also need to buy the new product once I am down to one last bottle. Then I can gradually introduce the new product to my skin. Nah!!!! Just another excuse to buy more things. Hee! Hee!

Gratification highlight of my career thus far

Last week, this mum came to celebrate the birthday of her 3 year-old girl. She is the prettiest thing that I have ever seen: an Australian-Chinese mix, she has the longest and softest of hair and her eyes are so doleful, that you would just want to hold her close to you and protect her.

Mummy was making some small talk with me when she told me, "A few days back Mia told me that she loved me and after that she told me "but I love Ms O too!""

You have no idea how happy I was. I still cannot believe and have to pinch myself sometimes to see if this was all real. It is. And it is very gratifying. Way pass gratification. It lets me know that my love for the kids do not go un-noticed. Just wondering whether her mummy was a little jealous or not :P

Just today too, one of my kids (girl of course) came from behind and give me a surprise kiss. Cute! Love her lots and love the whole bunch. Even my naughtiest boy actually looks forward to me patting him to sleep every afternoon. That is gratifying to know too. I am usually very stern and strict with him.

Babies, I love all of you! Muack!

What a relief

I did mention some months back (three months to be exact) that my car got 'kissed' by this Sulo rubbish truck? Actually it was more than a kiss. It was quite badly damaged on one side.

It only got repaired this week. Why so long?? Blame it on the insurance company and the rubbish disposal company. When we first lodged the report with the insurance company, they told us to wait for the other party (the rubbish disposal company) to file for report first (they were under the same insurance company as us). They took real long. Too long. They thought that we would just let it go like that. We were not going to.

I think it was the insurance agent's inefficiency that almost caused us our no-claim bonus. By the time about more than a month passed, and only then, the agent advised us to go ahead and do the repairs and claim from our own insurance first and wait to see if the other party would file. We were advised to write in first.

The reply we got was that we were not able to claim even under our own insurance as it has been more than two weeks!!!!

Wow! For a while, I thought the insurance company was trying to bring us for a joy ride and was trying to dodge paying us anything!!!

Dad wrote in again and reasoned with them some more and by then, the other party finally decided to own up. We sent our car in on Monday and got it back as promised. I must say I am super mega impressed with the works from this Mazda-approved workshop. Looks as good as new.

Finally got my baby back in good shape again. At least, I don't have to drive around getting funny stares from other drivers and feeling them avoid me as they feel that I am such a bad driver from what they can see from my car.

Pics from trip

Ok, so I promised some pics. Here they are!

Our room is on the second floor, overlooking the cafe. It was quite funny being able to watch the mega big screen when the soccer matches were going on.

The passageway leading from hotel to the shopping mall and vice versa.

The entrance to the Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall. The whole place is like an Egyptian pyramid.

Sunway Lagoon Resort. It is next to our hotel and it is a 5-star hotel while ours is a 4-star. No matter coz, it is good enough for me.

It was the Deepavali weekend. There were lots of these displays at the hotels and the shopping malls. I think it is called angoli, but I must check the spelling to be sure.

The chee cheong fun (rolled rice floor sheets) that I have eaten when I went to KL (short for Kuala Lumpur) as a teen. Still tastes the same: simple, good, yummy!

Hee! Just to prove that I have been to Sunway Lagoon. Didn't take any other pics.

How can I miss the opportunity to eat Dunkin Donuts? How can??? So I bought a box for the road.

What I did not set out to buy. Most of those hair rubber bands are for my kids. Going to give them for Christmas. My priced posessions are the pair of shoes from Vincci (VNC in Singapore) and the two bottles of peri-peri sauce from Nando's. Didn't get to eat it though coz Dad and Aunts wanted to eat at Chinatown (Jalan Sultan).

Sunway, my way

It's been a week or more since my last post. I have been busy being sick, travelling, working and going to school. Not necessarily in that order of course.

Anyway, for the first time, I stepped onto Sunway Lagoon in Kuala Lumpur last Deepavali long weekend. I stayed at the four-star hotel called Pyramid Tower, which was directly linked to a shopping mall. Yippeeeee!!!! Very convenient and very smart of the developer. Even though I did not intend to buy anything at first, I still bought me-self some little, little things. More like, I bought stuff for my kids for Christmas already.

We took a 26-seater coach by Five Star Travel Agency. They are very un-systematic and the service is bad. On the out-going trip, we were wrongly assigned to an 18-seater and was hurled of the coach by a very rude staff who just asked,"Envelope?" and after looking at it, told us, "You are not on this bus. Follow me."

When were were returning, what was supposed to be a 3.00pm departure from the hotel became 3.45pm. The coach was super, super late. What was an estimated arrival in Singapore of 10.00pm (after jams and all that, even though it should be a 5-hr trip), became 11.00pm. There was massive jam.

The KL I saw was very different from what I have seen many years ago. Maybe it is the capital of Malaysia and maybe, there is been massive improvements but the buildings do not seem so old and the people, I must say, are more orderly than us Singaporeans. They really queue up in a neat row when waiting for the MRT and/or LRT.

Part of me also wonders if it is because there is a "Polis" (Malay word for police)that is on duty on the platform. If it is and if it works, then I don't see why we should not have one of them standing at our platforms at all times. The thing is, we do have our "Security Officers" during peak hours on the platforms of our MRT stations, but they do little but stand around looking busy. They seem almost too timid to maintain order or perhaps, they might be too 'by the book' and might say that "I am only in charge of security (ie bomb scares and would-be suicide persons). Maintaining order is not in my job scope". I would not be surprised.

Well, that's it for now. I will post some pictures soon since I now have installed new handphone software into my computer and can use bluetooth to send my pics more quickly. There are also quite a bit more that I would like to say about my trip, so stay tuned.
