Slash and MJ

Was doing some major packing and arrangement of stuff when I dug out loads and loads of photos and several files full of posters that I have torn out from the then Radio and TV Times (now 8 Days). I had painstakingly filed them but thought that my mum had but thrown them all away. You can imagine my surprise when I saw them again!

One of the posters was of Michael Jackson and Slash (former guitarist of Guns & Roses). I was just wondering to myself as to why they took a picture when I found my answer over the TV programme. After all, the whole world is reporting about MJ. Slash was playing the guitar on his song "Black or White".

Coincidentally, that is also my favourite song. Correction: that is my second favourite. My favourite would be "We are the World".

More retro finds

Recently bought a Lily Allen album and an album by this group called "The bird and the bee". The former because she had a very cute song called f*** you plus, it is British (as opposed to the American, Kathy Perry). The latter because I read the review on JUICE,which was good, and it had a very retro look to it.

Yes, I am into all things retro now. Actually mostly clothes and music. For music, after the Ting Tings, I am quite into those indie groups rather than the more commercial sorts. Not that Lilly Allen is not mainstream. I guess, the rhythm and melody must be right. Pretty much go for the feel.

The funny part was that I was spotting quite some similarities between these two albums when I found out that the producer for Lily Allen's album was Greg Kurstin, the other half of "The bird and the bee"!!

Well, I am in that phase now. :)

If we hold on together

It's interesting how the song "If we hold on together" by Diana Ross started playing on Class 95 when I was writing a letter to my soon-to-be ex. This song was sung when I attended the Beginning Experience retreat, a retreat for people who are going through divorce or are suffering the loss of a loved one.

The lyrics are beautiful and so I thought I should record it down in my blog:

If We Hold On Together

Don’t lose your way
With each passing day
You’ve come so far
Don’t throw it away
Live believing
Dreams are for weaving
Wonders are waiting to start
Live your story
Faith, hope & glory
Hold to the truth in your heart

If we hold on together
I know our dreams will never die
Dreams see us through to forever
Where clouds roll by
For you and i

Souls in the wind
Must learn how to bend
Seek out a star
Hold on to the end
Valley, mountain
There is a fountain
Washes our tears all away
Words are swaying
Somebody's praying
Please let us come home to stay

If we hold on together
I know our dreams will never die
Dreams see us through to forever
Where clouds roll by
For you and i

When we are out there in the dark
We’ll dream about the sun
In the dark we’ll feel the light
Warm our hearts, everyone

If we hold on together
I know our dreams will never die
Dreams see us through to forever
As high as souls can fly
The clouds roll by
For you and i

Concert tonight

SANDY LAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Going for her concert tonight! Bought the tix like two to three months back I had to remind myself to keep it in the bag that I carry and once in awhile, check that it was really there! Haha!

If I manage to time myself efficiently, I would be taking one straight bus to the Indoor Stadium. Sigh...got to make sure that the shoes that I wear are comfortable. Can't be wearing stilettos.

Well, that does not mean that I cannot dress up! Hee... .Can't wait!

Silly me :(

Just went to double check on the date of the Hit Awards and it is the Deepavali weekend that I would not be around. Silly, silly, silly.

Nevertheless, I can still let my colleague know the price and see if she wants to go with someone else.

One down, three more to go.

More on Natasha

Forgot to say that it is strange and yet coincidental that Natasha Bedingfield will be going on tour in the US with none other than, New Kids on the Block (NKOTB). Hahahahaha!!!!

They were my favouritest boy band during my time. NKOTB, Take That, EMF and a little more. Hmm....

Oh! By the way, I feel that she looks like a bigger version of Hilary Duff, whom I happen to like, due to her positive image.

Natasha Bedingfield

Quite a mouthful, I would say, for a star/singer. But this name has stuck with me. More like her voice has stuck with me.

I first saw her MV on MTV and I was thinking "who in the right mind would write a song that has lyrics so tacky that it made me hair stand?"

It was the song I want to have your babies. Now on hindsight, I think she did a great job for this as it is not an easy phrase to write into a song. What really caught my attention was the song Soulmate. It was like writing about how I was (and perhaps, is) feeling and when I fund out the name of the singer and put one and one together, I almost wanted to faint. How could I go out there and buy an album whereby I totally loved one song but totally had goosebumps when listening to another??

I eventually bought it anyway and did not look back. I find that her voice has this uniqueness about it. A little edgy but not too edgy like Duffy or Amy Winehouse and her lyrics have got meaning. Meanings that I like.

Just bought her US-released album, Pocketful of Sunshine a few days back. No regrets even though half of it were songs were from the previous album that I had (called N.B.)

Well, here is the URL for her MV on Soulmate (since the embedding was disabled):http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEzbkGj7EaQ

p/s: Sorry, please cut and paste as either, there seems to be something wrong with the function at Blogger or my computer is too security-tight. Link doesn't seem o appear when I publish.

Shakespeare in love

Two times today and one time yesterday. That was the number of times that I heard this song (Shakespeare in love)within 2 days, and all on different radio channels. First at 88.3FM and then at Yes 9.33 FM and then on Class 95.0 FM. The funny part is that the first two are Chinese radio stations (not really for 88.3 coz they now play a mixture of both English and Chinese songs).

Why the overkill? Because today marks the death of William Shakespeare and I think that is one of the few songs that has the actual word "Shakespeare" in it. It is actually quite a catchy tune except when you hear it almost consecutively in one morning.

It just made me realise (even more) that information and the acquiring of knowledge can be from anywhere, even on radio stations. It is just whether we want to learn or not. Listening to the DJs talk about Shakespeare also reminded me of my Secondary school days whereby we had to study Romeo and Juliet and later on, my Pre-university days, where I studied Hamlet.

Did not like Hamlet and found it painful for we had to do so much critical thinking and try to smoke our way through (at a higher level) as to what Shakespeare was thinking when he wrote that or what the characters were actually thinking. Found it so tough. Of course, I am sure, my Lit-loving friend and her bf would beg to defer (heehee!)

I think for now, I would leave all that Shakespearean reading aside and leave it for a time when I can actually sit down, relax and really read. Digest and understand.

Oh, but I do remember this: "...be but sworn my love and I will no longer be a Capulet"

This then leads me to another song that starts with the lyrics "Montague and Capulets / Whispered through the wall / words which they could not forget, after all."

It is the song by Wilson Phillips called "Next to you (someday I'll be)". Aah...the memories. I am going to play that album again tonight. Loved it so much that I bought the CD format (had the cassette tape first).

Karaoke very ok!

Sigh...weekends and Internet do not go hand in hand in my little rented place. Somehow, it always miraculously does not get any connection and I was handicapped for the past 2 days.

Just as well though coz I was out most of the day on Sunday. Went to karaoke with a bunch of colleagues and contrary to the popular feedback about KTVs being bad (read: Kbox and Party World), this one was really, really good! It is called Topone Karaoke and it is situated near Bugis area.

From 11am-6pm, we just pay the price of $16 and we get to sing to our hearts' content and the drinks are free flow. Dirt cheap by local standards. By the way, that is the weekend price. I think weekdays would be cheaper still. Only thing is, we will all be at work :P

They had the latest songs and artists and they even have original MVs (music videos) for English songs, but then again, we only sang one English song so cannot really say too much yet.

All I can say is that the ambience was good and the format is like the Party World in Taiwan (don't think it is related to the Party World in Singapore if not, their layout would not be so bad). They have a reception and they have many floors of KTV rooms (as opposed to one floor area with many rooms).

We are assigned to a certain room at a certain floor and each floor has an overall in-charge who is already there to welcome us and lead us to the room.

Once in the room, there is a whole computer screen for us to select songs etc. We can control the lighting and if we want, there is even the dried ice effect (Hahahaha!) Found it quite funny coz one my colleagues just pressed the button halfway through one of the songs that we were singing and we all gave her stunned looks and burst out laughing. Quite star treatment. Hehehe....

The commendable part is their sound system. Best! There's no two ways about it. I will go back there again.

Updates to the film, In the name of God

Did a search over the Net and found that there were lots of buzz about this film and how it almost did not come to be. Here are the links:

And here is the very beautiful piece of music/song sung by Shaan (character: Mansoor) when he was attending school in Chicago.

Here's another video of the actual scene where Mansoor was practising the song with Janie. The cinematography was wonderful:

Anthony Lun

Remember I said that this person, Anthony Lun, was a great show producer and arranger for music? Well at least I mentioned it in one of my Sandy Lam postings. Here he is.

He was actaully a singer, and still is, but he found his forte by being in the back-end, becoming a song writer and producer. With him as producer for big shows and concerts, it is always a treat for audiences to watch.

Cool arrangement

I went for Sandy Lam' concert when she came in December 2006. I felt that the new arrangement for this song is so cool. Anthony, the person who did the arrangements for this song and the producer for the whole concert, did a fantastic job.

Too bad, the (I suspect) illegal recording of this video did not do justice to the music, plus there was actaully a part where he played solo on the piano, which is not shown. Pity, for that was the most fantastic part.
