OK! So it is not all gray skies here at camp Livvie. I went shopping last Good Friday eve. Bought myself a CD rack that I had been eyeing since the day I shifted. It could hold like hundred over CDs and I desperately needed that. No doubt my CDs were already sitting in those Ikea paper boxes called Kassette or something like that but I just felt it was not a long term solution, having to open the boxes one by one to search for the CDs. Anyway, the CD rack (or tower, as I like to call it) is called Benno and is now standing tall in my room, next to my mini hi-fi.
While I was there, I managed to grab the breakfast tray called Nordby, which I have longed to have since the days when I was acting as the rat in The three samurai cats for Asian Children's Festival. One of my colleagues had brought it to use as a prop. Now, I am proudly using it as I type, to put my laptop on my bed. Hee, perhaps I can use it when I really do feel like having breakfast in bed, but I am a believer of no-food-in-the-room.
As my income has shrunk considerably, I now really see the importance of being prudent, but it really makes me think twice, even three times before I buy anything and it also makes me treasure things more. I had a good time window shopping though and nothing beats a good plate of Swedish meatballs!!!!! Yummy!!!!! Had to give the gravlax a miss though coz I was spending on a budget. From another point of view, that would mean that I was eating less. Hee! I also had to decide to take only 10 meatballs instead of 15. Just as well too though, for the two gentlemen before me also only took 10. If I took 15, I would really sound and look like a glut. Hahaha!
I would probably need another CD tower but that would have to wait till next month or so, depending on what my priorities are. Anyway, I am just happy that I got most of my CDs rearranged and I am listening to my old CDs instead of keep buying new ones.

More retro finds
Recently bought a Lily Allen album and an album by this group called "The bird and the bee". The former because she had a very cute song called f*** you plus, it is British (as opposed to the American, Kathy Perry). The latter because I read the review on JUICE,which was good, and it had a very retro look to it.
Yes, I am into all things retro now. Actually mostly clothes and music. For music, after the Ting Tings, I am quite into those indie groups rather than the more commercial sorts. Not that Lilly Allen is not mainstream. I guess, the rhythm and melody must be right. Pretty much go for the feel.
The funny part was that I was spotting quite some similarities between these two albums when I found out that the producer for Lily Allen's album was Greg Kurstin, the other half of "The bird and the bee"!!
Well, I am in that phase now. :)

Une belle soiree
I had a very wonderful evening last night. I went to watch Melanie Pain sing at the Esplanade. It was a belated birthday present from a very nice friend.
For those of you who do not know who Melanie Pain is, she is the lead singer for Nouvelle Vague who has this very nice whispery sort of voice when she wants to. The sort that French singers are so good at.
We even got an autographed sampler for a mere $10. Some of our friends who went for the second session, did not get any. Apparently it was a while stocks last thingy.
We were very early in the queue and got front row seats-best seats in the house! The pianist, bassist and guitarist were all so cute!! Most importantly though, she had a very good voice, and very nice shoes! :P
As the night was still young after a short one hour odd mini concert, we went to have some drinks and cakes at what I like to call "that anal place". I would not say the name now but you will definitely see it if you were taking the bus or walking to Esplanade from Marina Square.
Food and tea was good though, except my dear friend almost lost her copy of autographed of the sampler. Thankfully, a cleaner found it for her (she left it in the toilet together with some other stuff). What a relieve to have found it back!

The Ting Tings tinks!!!!
Woah!!! Attended the gig by The Ting Tings at Fort Canning was fantastic!! Just wished that I was much taller. Was pushed by this faggert looking youngster (sorry, but no sorry. If he were a little more polite and gracious, I would not be so mean with my words) and was at one time being smoked by these two smokers blowing their bad air all around. Still wondering why NEA don't want to work with events companies to make these events a proud smoke-free event??
Oh! Did I tell you I bought their album only 4 days before their performance and could pretty much sing along to most of their chorus. Their catchy lyrics and retro sounds just got me sooooo hooked that I HAD to listen to them everyday.
Another secret? I didn't want to watch them in the first place. It was The Prodigy that I wanted to watch and as they were both British acts, they were publicised together. They had lots of exposure: every corner you turned, there were their posters and their collaterals. I tested their sounds in a CD shop and bought it there and then. The rest, as they say, is history.

I admit that some of them pics are not so well taken. Blame it on this amateur photographer who took most pics in indoor mode till almost the end of the gig!
Even till now, this still rings in my head:
They call me hell
They call me Stacey
They call me her
They call me Jane
That's not my name!
That's not my name!
That's not my name!
That's not my..NAME!

Sleep. Now.
Going to have to reach workplace at 7 am tomorrow. It is one of those days where we can go early and leave early and the workplace would be as peaceful as hell except for the noise of the radio blaring away.
Night-Night everyone. Going to be so dead by the end of tomorrow.

Concert tonight
SANDY LAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Going for her concert tonight! Bought the tix like two to three months back I had to remind myself to keep it in the bag that I carry and once in awhile, check that it was really there! Haha!
If I manage to time myself efficiently, I would be taking one straight bus to the Indoor Stadium. Sigh...got to make sure that the shoes that I wear are comfortable. Can't be wearing stilettos.
Well, that does not mean that I cannot dress up! Hee... .Can't wait!

"Welcome to where time stands still..."
Hahahaha....Those were the lyrics and the start to Metallica's song, Sanitarium and yes, I was a fan and yes, I still remember those lines. I would like to think that I expose myself to a wide range of music and heavy metal was, and still is one of them.
It all started when I went to pre-university. I was hanging out with this group of girls and one of them had a nickname called Morbid Angel. She was this church-going, drum playing girl who put on black lipstick and nail polish at the slightest chance she could, despite the fact that she had a pretty strict dad (sorry uncle) who kept remembering my name as "Shandy" (like the beer with sprite drink. Hahaha!).
She introduced me to Guns N' Roses, Def Leppard, Sepultura, Skid Row (I remember you) and of course, there was Metallica. The black album was all the craze and almost everyday without fail, we would be singing "Exit light, enter night, take my hand, off to never- never land" during recess.
Why all this reminiscence? I was at HMV two days ago and I saw Metallica's new album out on the shelves. It was called Death Magnetic. It was on one of the tester CD stations and I took an 'earshot' at it. Wow!!! Completely blew me away with all this familiar 'duhn...duhta,duhta...' sound. It is the sort of sound that I like. The sounds being produced by bass guitars and played by Lars Ulrich. It's something very...Metallica.
I was really tempted to buy the album already except that I find their intro very long and I am not sure, at this point of time, whether I can still take to this type of head-banging for more than 10 minutes. Got me-self a Robin Thicke instead, among some others. Will test-listen to it a few more times before deciding whether to get it or not.
For now, I will just "sleep with one eye open..." (lyrics from Enter Sandman). Hahahahaha....!
Just a little note: I am no music expert and I do not bother myself too much with musical terminology. Therefore, there might be certain terms that may not be accurately described. Whatever it is, this is a personal posting so I really do not care much for terminology. Ha!

Silly me :(
Just went to double check on the date of the Hit Awards and it is the Deepavali weekend that I would not be around. Silly, silly, silly.
Nevertheless, I can still let my colleague know the price and see if she wants to go with someone else.
One down, three more to go.

Concerts, musicals, awards and such
Gosh!!! There are so many performances coming to town that I really do not know which one to go to. Worse of all is that I cannot go for all of them!
First of all, Rihanna is coming to town!! Not sure if any of my friends would be that interested to want to go and see her but I am prepared to go alone. The price is a little steep though. I am also waiting a little longer before purchasing the tix. I do not want them to pull a Robbie Williams on me. You see, he was supposed to come and we bought tix and all only to hear that he was cancelling his tour to this part of the world. There were refunds and all that but it was quite a big disappointment.
Then, another friend wants to see Kylie. Her, I am ok. Won't die if I don't see her concert. Besides, she cancelled before too! That was only coz she found out she had breast cancer just then.
To tell you the truth, the last time I saw one of these pop/ contemporary Western singers come, was when New Kids on the Block came to Town. Hahahahaha!!!! Don't laugh alright? They just came out with their comeback album and my childhood schoolmate, who now lives in the States, just went for their concert! I can't believe that after all these years, she is still so into them.
Then there is the musical, Cinderella, which is performed by Lea Salonga and a whole stellar cast from Broadway. That, I would very much like to watch too.
There is also the Singapore Hit Awards which my colleague is very interested in going.
Sigh...decisions, decisions. I would give Rihanna 90% affirmity of going and Cinderella 80%. As for Hit Awards, I will see what my colleague says tomorrow.

What a lazy day kind of day, except...
Was supposed to go to Ubin with my colleagues today, but the weather wasn't too promising. It was threatening to rain. We all decided to sleep in.
Watched some TV, did some blogging (as you can see from my previous postings) and planned to go watch a movie on my own. Then I learnt that one of my grand aunts have passed away. This saddened me quite a bit as she was my favourite grand aunt. She was always laughing loudly (like me) during any sort of family gatherings, which is usually at birthday and wedding dinners. Her older sister was the more sarcastic one and never fails to tell you off.
Anyway, still went to watch Mama Mia! but with Dad and Mum instead. Quite surprised that Dad would want to watch it as he is quite picky about movies. The are certain genres that he just would not watch. I guess Meryl Streep got him to go and watch it.
We went to Downtown East, which was not too bad at all, except Mum did not like the noise or crowd one bit. It gave her a splitting headache. I was just having fun, eating Superdog hotdog and enjoying the movie. I was tapping my toes the beat of the music most of the time.
Said part came when we went for the wake. Although I know that she has been called home to be with the Lord, I just feel really sad still. I just went to visit her on September 1st when I had a Teacher's Day holiday. Little did I know that it will be my last.
I guess this is my wake up call to visit my own granny more often, as always find some kind of excuse not to. Maybe subconsciously, I do not want to see them get old, but I do know that time is running out and I should not delay any longer.

When the going gets tough
It has been a horrible, tearful day. Must be due to the time of the month coming soon. Hearing one of Natasha Bedingfield's songs kind of made me look on the bright side of things though.
After all, there are two sides to a coin and one can choose to mull over things or to look on the bright side and just smile.
I went to pick up my wicker basket today. Was at Novena Square first and had to pass by the St Alphonsus Church (or what is popularly called the Novena Church) and although I told myself that I was not going to delay any further and get to my destination (to pick up my basket). Sub-consciously though, I think I did want to go in.
My feet brought me to the church proper (as I could not find the grotto, silly me) Nevertheless, I just prayed and prayed my worries and troubles away. It was very peaceful. There were some others who were praying or sitting there, having some adoration time.
After my own private time with God, I went on my way. The basket was big. Much bigger than it looked in the picture. Chatted with my friend for a while (or a little too long while) and finally, I waited for my bus to come.
One funny thing happened. This small boy was waiting for the bus at the bus stop with his mum and maid but he was playing somewhere else before. When he was called for and came towards his mum, he starting trying to peep into the basket, thinking there is an animal in there!! Cute!
He was not really convinced that there wasn't anything in there and took several peeks more. That perked me up a little.
Well, when the going gets tough, there is mp3 music and then, there is God.

Over the weekend
Friday...more quiet solitude
Went to watch Iron Man, finally. On my own. Never felt better. There was premature happiness that Kelly might join me after my movie (since she called me and messaged me halfway into my movie. Did the despicable thing of sms-ing during the show).
However, when I called her back after the show, there was no reply. Messaged her, no reply. I walked on to my next favourite past time: HMV CD-listening. Found this treasure of a CD having 100 of those all-time favourite TV theme songs! These included Growing Pains, Sesame Street, Melrose Place, Cheers and more. Funny thing was that they did not have Charles in Charge, which somehow got stuck in my head after all these years.
After 10.30pm, I headed for my car with said satisfied purchase. I had to avoid that stupid ERP (money sucking gigantic toll machine that works till then). I know, I did say I would be able to spend less by going into town less, but I consider this minimal purchase. I guess our 'friends' from the LTA (those guys responsible for this ERP thingy) must have been looking from the other side of the coin: The longer you stay in town, the more you spend.
I also kind of understand now, why Dad used to plan and be so calculative about ERP gantry points and parking places. It was quite tricky for me going into town for the ERP rate goes from $1.50 to $2.00 at 6.00pm. The $1.50 charge is only from 5.30pm to 5.59pm.
However, my per entry charge for the car park only starts at 6.00pm. Timing must be real accurate and as luck was on my side, I was able to save some money. Plus I also managed to search out the car park that has the cheapest rate without making me feel like it is a dangerous place to park (read: Far East Plaza car park).
Saturday...meeting with friends
Went for lunch at Pasta Cafe and I must say, I am impressed with their Parma prosciutto parmigiana pasta. Light and tasty. Reminds me a little of the one that I had in Melbourne on Degraves Street but that one had stir-fried rockets with it, which made it extra fragrant. A slightly different taste.
Wanted to watch Kung Fu Panda at night but as it was the weekend and school holidays, all tix were sold out. SOLD OUT!!!! I absolutely hate GV. OK, make it a love-hate relationship. Anyway, it is not my first choice of cinema when it comes to movies.
Ended up shopping and then heading to Chinatown to this very un-assuming coffee shop selling Sichuan and Northern China food fare. It had those Sichuan barbecue skewers which were tres delicious and there other stuff that were really good too! Didn't take any pics as I was real hungry but promise to do so the next time.
Took a look at the name of the shop and directly translated, it means "China Restaurant". In Chinese, it is 中国餐厅. Will be back there soon.
Sunday...wedding days and rainy days
The sky threatened to rain, but alas! It did not. Was going to go cycling with some colleagues after attending another colleague's wedding (will talk about wedding in the next post maybe), but because the sky was so threatening that we decided to call it off. What a pity. Could have gone ahead anyway and enjoyed a less crowded East Coast Parkway.
Went home to sleep some more and watched McBride on Hallmark Channel. Lurrve the mystery solving crap and the suspense crap too. Keeps me on my toes, sort of.
Well, I am actually really nervous about my new job and am trying hard not to think too much about it. Will face it tomorrow. For now, it is snooze time.

Funny-Strange Dream
Before I go on to tell you about what went on today, I would like to recall a dream I had early this morning.
I usually hate early morning dreams. They are usually stressful and related to work. I can still remember the time many years back (at least 4 or 5 OK?!) when my dream was me running around frantically looking for participants to join a programme. I was panicking like hell and it did not help that my then boss appeared and chased me to go look for more participants.
There were more like these, but I think I shall stop here for now. What I dreamt this morning was very different. I call it the strange-funny dream.
I was at this place, not exactly on a grass patch but more of a concrete ground and I was actually trying to stand up with my Rollerblades. I remember being in my dream, third person style, asking my dream self, whether I could actually blade and who gave me those blades.
My dream self was not that confident but managed to stand up and blade!!! While blading, my dream self answered my omni-present self that the blades were given by OLKgal!!!!! Shock and horror!
Omni-present self asked dream self whether she was sure and she said "yes". Then omni-present self realised something funny coz the blades were Adidas brand. I remember asking myself, "since when did Adidas come up with roller blades?"
The design also looked a little awkward. Like the manufacturer just put one and one together and did not care much about design. Looked a little like the roller skates that we used to have, but with in-line rollers in place.
Dream self was really good at blading and could also do the advance stopping by twirling around and using right heel. Fantastic!
Omni-present self asked dream self again whether she was sure that OLKgal gave the blades to her and dream self said "yes". Dream self was blading happily.
At that point, I got woken up by my hand phone message signal, which I thought was from work again. Too knocked out to see who, but turns out it's some irritating friend from some past life..keke...deleted the message right away and fell right back to sleep, while having FD and Venetta softly 'humming' in the background. My daily morning must-have. Well, usually it's Glenn, but he has gone to Bali on a holiday and so, Venetta. Better yet though coz I think Glenn gets a little dry sometimes.

Dancing queen
Hmm...I know I am working backwards, but I just have to blog a little about my Saturday evening.
I really had fun!! Went to Attica in the end (after much contemplation about which club to go). Turns out that all of us lurve house music and we danced till we could not dance anymore.
Was just a little fed up with some people who were not very gracious on the dance floor. I ended up 'boxing' this guy up again. He and partner were edging and edging towards me until I had hardly any space to move. At first, I got so pissed that I stood still. Just crossed my arms and stood there. When he continued to do all that edging, and when I could not take it anymore, I danced with such 'vengeance', with arms flying everywhere. Hehe...I am polite and gracious on the dance floor, but do not get on my nerves. If you get on my nerves, I will make sure you get it from me big time.
Anyhow, we went for supper at Maxwell. Mmmm....my beloved bee hoon goreng (fried bee hoon, Indian Muslim style). Also discovered a drink stall which served very nice bandung drink (rose syrup with evaporated milk). They only put in the milk when they serve, not readily-mixed. This way, you can actually taste the 'fragrance' of the milk.
We chatted and talked, mainly about ghosts and haunted places and we only left at 5am in the morning. I was really tired, but really happy.

Shakespeare in love
Two times today and one time yesterday. That was the number of times that I heard this song (Shakespeare in love)within 2 days, and all on different radio channels. First at 88.3FM and then at Yes 9.33 FM and then on Class 95.0 FM. The funny part is that the first two are Chinese radio stations (not really for 88.3 coz they now play a mixture of both English and Chinese songs).
Why the overkill? Because today marks the death of William Shakespeare and I think that is one of the few songs that has the actual word "Shakespeare" in it. It is actually quite a catchy tune except when you hear it almost consecutively in one morning.
It just made me realise (even more) that information and the acquiring of knowledge can be from anywhere, even on radio stations. It is just whether we want to learn or not. Listening to the DJs talk about Shakespeare also reminded me of my Secondary school days whereby we had to study Romeo and Juliet and later on, my Pre-university days, where I studied Hamlet.
Did not like Hamlet and found it painful for we had to do so much critical thinking and try to smoke our way through (at a higher level) as to what Shakespeare was thinking when he wrote that or what the characters were actually thinking. Found it so tough. Of course, I am sure, my Lit-loving friend and her bf would beg to defer (heehee!)
I think for now, I would leave all that Shakespearean reading aside and leave it for a time when I can actually sit down, relax and really read. Digest and understand.
Oh, but I do remember this: "...be but sworn my love and I will no longer be a Capulet"
This then leads me to another song that starts with the lyrics "Montague and Capulets / Whispered through the wall / words which they could not forget, after all."
It is the song by Wilson Phillips called "Next to you (someday I'll be)". Aah...the memories. I am going to play that album again tonight. Loved it so much that I bought the CD format (had the cassette tape first).

Paul Van Dyk
Just realised that the music that I like sometimes have got a hint of Hindi music in it,like in this first clip.
Chose this second clip because the MV kinda reflects my life now: Doing things alone and looking in from the outside :)
Like a drug
Was back at my parents' last night and I suddenly wanted to listen to DJ Tiesto's latest album real bad (well not really. His latest is the live concert recorded in Copenhagen as heard at HMV the other day).
Anyway, here's my favourite from Tiesto:
It was real funny coz I was like a drug addict trying to sniff out the drug. Searched the whole of my CD collection and then went down to the car CD stacker to search only to come to the conclusion that it must be back at my little rented place :(
Had to settle for Paul Van Dyk instead. A little more commercial but still bearable. Blasted the mini hi-fi till about ten past. It has been a long time since I did something like that.
It's a sign! A sign that I need to boogy. Soon! This Friday. Housemate has ditto-ed this and so...(in whisper) I think we are going to paint the town red. Sort of anyway. We have all been so caught up with our own work that we need to let our hair down.
